What happens during a tattoo consultation?
Know what to bring, what to discuss, and what questions to ask before your tattoo appointment.
What to bring
Bring three to five references that show what you love — not to copy, but to calibrate taste: line weight, mood, density, subject matter. Add photos of the placement on your own body in natural light, your budget range, and any dates you are working toward. If you have old tattoos nearby, we need to see them too.
What we discuss
Expect twenty to thirty unhurried minutes. We talk through the idea behind the piece, size and placement options on your body, how the design will age on your skin tone, session count for larger work, and an honest price range. You will leave knowing exactly what happens next — or knowing this studio is not the right fit, which is also a good outcome.
Questions worth asking
- Who will draw my piece, and can I see healed photos of similar work?
- How many sessions will this take, and how far apart?
- What size does this idea actually need to age well?
- What is included in the quote — touch-ups, drawing rounds, aftercare?
- What should I do, or avoid, in the week before my session?
After the consult
Consultations at Thornvein are free and carry no obligation. If you book, a deposit secures your dates and goes toward the final price; your artist then draws your piece in the week before the session. One sketch round is included, with refinements finalised on the stencil with you in the mirror on the day.
Ready to talk through your idea? Consultations take 20–30 minutes.
